Martial Artist

Martial arts are paths to self-knowledge and defense with roots in combat training, meditation and religion.  Martial arts are studied for many different reasons: health and fitness, self-defense, discipline, character development, self-confidence and sport.  But the common theme among those who practice and teach a martial art is just that, practice.

Many martial arts, especially those from Asia, teach side disciplines which pertain to medicinal practices. This is particularly prevalent in traditional Chinese martial arts which may teach bone-setting, Qigong, Acupuncture, Acupressure (Tui Na), and other aspects of traditional Chinese medicine.  

There is an abundance of different styles and techniques of martial arts.  A martial artists is anyone who practices a martial art, such as:

Karate
Aikido
Judo
Tai Chi Chuan
Qi Gong
Sumo
Taekwondo

This is only the tip of the iceberg; hundreds of countries around the world have traditions of many thousands of different martial arts with myriad techniques, purposes and histories.
